Marie Osmond Recalls Her Daughter ‘Living in Her Car’: ‘It Was the Hardest Time in Her Life’
She may love being the doting mom of eight kids, but even Marie Osmond knows parenting isn’t always the easiest task. While recently chatting with her cohosts during an episode of The Talk, the iconic entertainer opened up some of the difficulties she faced while raising her big brood — including the time one of her daughters was nearly homeless.
“I know that I enabled my older children a little bit,” the 60-year-old superstar — who is the mom of Stephen, 36, Jessica, 31, Rachael, 30, Brandon, 22, Brianna, 21, Matthew, 20, Abigail, 17, and late son Michael — shared with the audience on Wednesday, October 23. “All my children are very hard workers but it’s easier to teach them when they’re young than when they’re older and you have to do something difficult.”
Looking back on earlier years with her kids, Marie recalled the one time she had to use tough love. “For example, my one daughter was struggling and couldn’t just quite get it together and I would help her and I would help her,” the “Paper Roses” songstress explained, not identifying which child it was. “And I know this sounds terrible, but there was one point she called me after multiple times and she’s like, ‘Mom!’ And I’m like, ‘I’m sorry, I’m not going to help you.’ And I knew she would end up living in her car.”
Although she was worried that her daughter would become homeless, the Donny & Marie star knew she had to put her foot down. “And she says today — she’s one of my hardest workers — and she said today that it was the hardest time in her life and I cried,” she continued. “But I knew if I didn’t reboot her, that she would be that way her whole life.”
The Dancing With the Stars alum recalled the bittersweet moment when everything turned around for her inspiring daughter. “She sat there crying saying ‘nobody loves me, nobody loves me,'” the loving mom explained. “But then she said, ‘Well, I can love me.'” Aww!
Although the situation was heartbreaking for Marie and her kiddo, the legendary performer learned an important lesson. “I think if you teach your children to have that ethic,” she said, adding, “our jobs as parents is to teach them to take care of themselves … but to be there when they need it.”
Marie is such an amazing mom to her kids!
