Mariah Carey Warns Friend Lionel Richie Not to Join the ‘American Idol’ Reboot — “Don’t Do It!”

It looks like Mariah Carey said has said goodbye to American Idol for good — and thinks Lionel Richie should do the same! The singer recently caught up with Entertainment Tonight to spill on what she thinks about the rumors that Lionel is being considered for a judging spot on the American Idol reboot.

“I would say, don’t do it,” Mariah told ET on Monday, July 31. “No, I’m only kidding. If he wants to do it, that’ll be great. I think he would be really good at it.”

It’s no surprise that the singer would have that advice for Lionel since her experience on the show was tumultuous, to say the least. “Yeah, they just were trying to foil me when I went on there,” Mariah said about her time as a judge during the 2013 season of the singing competition. “So, you know, that’s the only reason why I say that [to Lionel].”

The pop-star and the “Endless Love” singer are currently headlining their All The Hits tour and most recently performed in LA on Monday night. Since they’re performing together, it’s safe to say that the two have grown even closer and Lionel would take Mariah’s advice to heart.

One thing is for sure — Mariah will not be returning for the reboot. When previously questioned about returning to be a judge she said, “Hell no! Absolutely not! That was the worst experience of my life.” Well, at least fans can look forward to seeing Katy Perry on the show!
