HeartbreakingMadonna Pays an Emotional Tribute to Prince at the Billboard Music Awards
Madonna just honored her late friend Prince in a very special way.
The 57-year-old singer paid an emotional tribute to Prince — who sadly died at age 57 in April — at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 22.
Madonna on May 22.
Before Madonna’s performance, musician Questlove offered a few touching words about the late singer. “No matter our race, our color, our creed [or] sexual orientation, all of us live in the land of music and [Prince’s] departure from it was an earthquake,” he began.
“But his departure leaves behind so much work still to do — and we can follow the trails he blazed, we can follow his example, we can be fierce, we can be uncompromising, we can be experimental. We can also listen to all the songs he left for us — he was very, very generous in that regard,” Questlove continued.
Madonna and Stevie Wonder on May 22.
“And as we move forward, we will encounter every single day, more reasons to remember [Prince]. Every time we hear a really great guitar solo we’re going to remember… I just want to take a moment to remember the great Prince Rogers Nelson,” he concluded.
After singing a solo of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” Madonna was then surprisingly joined onstage by Stevie Wonder and the two performed an emotional rendition of “Purple Rain.” What a way to end the show!
