When the reboots of Roseanne and Will & Grace hit so strong, one of the other Classic TV shows rumored to be coming back was Mad About You, starring Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt. There was quite a buzz for a while, but then things quieted down. Now comes word that the show will indeed be coming back as a limited series as a Spectrum Original with cocreator Peter Tolan serving as showrunner.
The original ’90s series followed the first few years of marriage between Paul and Jamie Buchman (Paul and Helen). At one point, Reiser suggested what the revival would be like and it sounded great. Nearly 20 years after the original went off the air, it will have Paul and Jamie coping with empty nest syndrome as their daughter, Mabel, heads off to college and they have to adjust to the next chapter in their lives and the fact that they’ve reached middle age.
In a joint statement, Paul and Helen offer, “We are so excited to finally be doing this and thrilled to have Peter Tolan as our fearless captain. We promise you the same funny and heartwarming show — as soon as we can remember what’s funny about being older. It’s going to be great!”
Back in 2017, Paul previously hinted at a possible revival to People, “For years I would’ve said, ‘Absolutely no. We never would do it,’ because I was very proud of how we ended it really well. We even told the future a little bit, so our thinking at the time was, ‘Let’s make sure we never get tempted to come back. Let’s tell them what happens.’ Now, because everybody’s talking about it, I started to think, ‘Maybe if there’s a story we could come up with.’ To me, it’s interesting when I see my kids are growing and leaving the house. It’s like, ‘Oh.’ It’s like that moment when you get married. It’s like we’re in a new world that we don’t know the rules of.”
As to the new version, Katherine Pope, Head of Original Content, enthuses, “We are beyond thrilled to team up with Sony Pictures Television to give Mad About You an exclusive home at Spectrum Originals. Two decades ago, fans fell in love with this show, and this time will be no different as Paul, Helen and Peter explore modern marriage through the eyes of two people who have just become empty-nesters. We can’t wait for everyone to fall in love with the Buchmans all over again. ”
Frankly, we never stopped!
