A Little House on the Prairie reboot is heading to our TV screens in a “reimagined” way! Fans received the news in January 2025 that “a new generation will have its own version” of the “treasured novels” on Netflix. In May 2025, the first casting announcement was made.

Rebecca Sonnenshine was named the showrunner and one of the executive producers for the revival of the classic show, which was based on books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The original series, which first premiered in 1974, depicted the lives of the Ingalls family in 1870s Minnesota. It starred Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, Melissa Gilbert, Melissa Sue Anderson, Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush, Dean Butler, Richard Bull, Katherine MacGregor and Victor French.

“I fell deeply in love with these books when I was five years old,” Sonnenshine said. “They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new global audience with Netflix.”

Whispers of a reboot have been buzzing for years, but now it’s finally coming to fruition.

“It has been a long-held dream of mine to carry on my father’s legacy and adapt Wilder’s classic American stories for a 21st century audience in a way that brings together fans of both the books and the original television series,” executive producer Trip Friendly said in a statement, referring to his father, Ed Friendly, who produced the original show. “I am thrilled by our talented creative team led by Rebecca Sonnenshine who are bringing these beloved stories about family, community, and survival to longtime fans and new generations.”

As for what stories the show will follow, Netflix teased what’s to come.

“A transformed adaptation of Wilder’s semi-autobiographical books, the new Little House on the Prairie is part family drama, part epic survival tale and part origin story of the American West,” the press release said. “The series will offer a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”

“Little House on the Prairie has captured the hearts and imaginations of so many fans around the world, and we’re excited to share its enduring themes of hope and optimism with a fresh take on this iconic story,” Jinny Howe, Vice President, Drama Series, Netflix, said. “Rebecca’s vision threads the needle with an emotional depth that will delight both new and existing fans of this beloved classic.”

“This could do with a reboot. The original ended ages ago,” one person wrote. “Most Millennials and Gen Z have probably never even heard of it.”

Who Was Cast in the ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Reboot’?

In May 2025, Netflix announced that Alice Halsey was cast as Laura Ingalls, Skywalker Hughes was cast as Mary Ingalls, Luke Bracey was cast as Charles Ingalls and Crosby Fitzgerald was cast as his wife, Caroline Ingalls.
