Laurie Metcalf is opening up about The Conners’ final season and what ending to expect for the show’s cast of characters. Sadly, season 7 of the show, which premieres on Wednesday, March 26, will only span six episodes.

“There’s a lot to wrap up and I think the writers are really working hard to get everybody’s storylines sort of … not completed,” Laurie, 69, told People in an interview published on March 26. “It’s not going to have a big bow tied up with the Conners.”

“And it will remain true to their storyline, what happens to them in the final episode,” she added. “But, it’s a very short amount of time to wrap up this many seasons of a family that’s covered decades.”

In the season 7 premiere, slated for 8 p.m. ET on ABC, “Darlene celebrates her promotion, hoping it will allow her to spend more time with Ben. Meanwhile, Jackie stumbles upon an opportunity to sue the pharmaceutical company responsible for Roseanne’s addiction, which sparks a family debate,” according to the show’s official logline.

It was first announced in May 2024 that The Conners was renewed for a shortened final season with Laurie and costars John Goodman, Sara Gilbert and Lecy Goranson.

“You’ve been part of this family for years,” the promo for the new season said. “After 6 seasons, be there to say goodbye.”

One thing that is for certain is that fans of The Conners are sad to see the show’s cast take their final bows.

The Conners took a minute to find their bearings after the whole debacle with Roseanne. I almost gave up on it, but the show really turned around and now I’m sad it’s leaving!” one person wrote underneath a post on the show’s Instagram account. “But it’s been a long run. It’s wild to think I grew up watching the original and then got to spend time with these great characters as an adult.”

“I’m going to miss your company!!! Thank you for creating these fantastic characters that brought us comfort, laughter, and tears,” another person reflected. “You will all be missed!”

“This one hurts,” another person said. “I always wished I could go to a taping. It’s been a joy to not only watch this as a kid but now share it with my daughter. And it was actually an amazing reboot with purpose and soul. It’s sad knowing we can’t watch their chapters and family anymore after literal decades. They feel like a real family.”

“Hate to say goodbye to a good thing,” another wrote. “When season 10 of Roseanne came back, it was much needed at that time. And sure glad, The Conners came back and kept pushing. I know this is just a show and they are just a tv family. But, I’ve grown up watching the show with my mom and grandma during the last season and then the reruns. And I have adopted them all as my tv family. Love the show and the family and of course as themselves so much. I will be sad when it ends, but I will still watch collections of Roseanne and of course the Conners. Whenever I need a good laugh, a good cry, more words of wisdom, etc. everything that feels good.”
