Will an impossible dream come true for Frasier fans? As he strode to work in London, where he’ll star as Don Quixote in the musical Man of La Mancha later in April, Kelsey Grammer clutched what appeared to be a new script for Frasier, the beloved comedy series he starred in from 1993 until 2004.

Kelsey, 64, revealed last summer that he’d be open to returning to television as Dr. Frasier Crane if he found the right script. “I just want to make sure it’s really good,” he said. “Some of the folks — probably most of the folks who were on the original show — would be back, but we’re someplace else. Something has happened. We’re not going to pick up where we left off.”

In addition to catching up with the series’ characters — Frasier left Seattle and his radio job in the finale — the reboot will have to account for the absence of John Mahoney. The veteran actor, who played Frasier’s gruff, retired police detective dad Martin, died in 2018. “Everyone else would come back,” says an insider. “They all love Kelsey, and they loved each other.”

With so many comedy reboots, including Will & Grace and Mad About You, it seems it’s only a matter of time until the good doctor comes back to television. “We’re talking with a few writers and discussing the options and where we might think it’s appropriate to put us,” Kelsey says. “There’s some movement. We’ll see what happens.”

As of last month, Kelsey revealed that nobody had yet officially bought a Frasier reboot. “Well, my hope is that we can bring it back, [but] we’re sort of shopping for the right idea,” he admitted. “We hope somebody wants to buy the cheque, but no one has come up to us yet.”

Aside from bringing the iconic show back, Kelsey — already dad to seven kids — also apparently wants to have more children with wife Kayte Walsh. Given the fact that he says his numerous kiddos keep him young, we can’t blame Kelsey for wanting more.
