Kathleen Turner Reveals She Almost Had An Affair With Michael Douglas: ‘The Chemistry Was There’
While Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas showed an incredible connection on-screen, the same was true off-screen — so much so that the pair almost took it to the next level.
The 64-year-old reveals that “the sexual attraction was all too real” between she and the actor, 74. “‘The chemistry was there and Michael and I were both terrible flirts,” she tells the Daily Mail, recalling how close they got while filming their 1984 classic Romancing the Stone.
“I thought Michael was separated. We were in the jungle and I was feeling very romantic towards him,’ the Oscar-nominated actress says. “It was going to happen. Then I walked on set one day and his wife was suddenly there.”
Upon seeing the Wall Street star’s wife at the time, Diandra Luker, Kathleen suddenly realized that her costar was indeed a married man. “She sat next to him and made that very clear to me,” the Peggy Sue Got Married star recalls. “And that was that. You don’t mess with another woman’s husband.”
Michael would go on to divorce his first wife in 2000, after 23 years of marriage and eventually say I do to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones. In fact, Kathleen says she feels bad for the Chicago star, 49, “because she must get really sick of people saying what great chemistry he and I had.” And while Michael and Kathleen went on to star in two more films together [The Jewel of the Nile and The War of the Roses], she reveals that any romance with the actor “would have been a complete disaster.”
“He’s ten years older and comes from a family of all-males,” the Golden Globes winner says. “He would have tried to squelch me. We would have killed each other. It would have been dreadful. There would have been no happy ending.”
Kathleen does say that she and Michael regularly see each other for lunch and they remain close friends. These days Michael is still married to Catherine, and has three kids, Cameron, 40, from his first marriage, Dylan, 18, and Carys, 15. Kathleen isn’t currently married, but does share a daughter, Rachel Ann, 31, with her ex-husband, Jay Weiss.
