Our thoughts are with Katharine McPhee. The former American Idol star took to Instagram on Monday, July 16 to reveal that her father has sadly died.

"I can’t believe I’m even writing this… But it is with a heavy heart that I share that my sweet sweet Papa left this earth yesterday morning. We as a family are completely heartbroken and devastated. He was my biggest fan, my biggest champion, always telling me to 'Give em hell kid!'" she wrote alongside a selfie of the two.

"He was so kind and caring and made sure we knew how much he loved us. Not sure my heart will ever be the same. I’m so sad he missed my Broadway debut," Katharine, 34, continued. "But when I return to the stage next week I hope he can watch it in peace and from up above. Thank you to all my friends who’ve been so loving and supportive these last 48 hours. I love you Papa. I already miss you so much. This hurts."

Katharine is currently starring in Waitress on Broadway in NYC. On Saturday, July 14, she shared that she'd have to miss a few upcoming shows due to a family emergency. "Hey my Waitress fans… I’m so so sorry to inform you I will be out this weekend from the shows," she said. "I’m having to fly back to LA right now for a family emergency. It breaks my heart to disappoint anyone. Sending all my love."

This unfortunate news comes just weeks after Katharine and David Foster, 68, confirmed their engagement. "He did it at the top of this mountain in Anacapri," she previously said of the special moment. "Totally dark only stars," Katharine continued before jokingly adding, "Thankfully he didn’t push me off the cliff. He said it was one or the other and in the end he spared me."

And we're sure David has been there consoling Katharine since the passing of her dad. A source previously shared with In Touch, "David is different than any other guy she’s dated before. He’s a gentleman."
