She just welcomed baby No. 3, but Kate Hudson isn’t done learning how to be the best mama to her children. For some women, motherhood might not come as naturally as it does for others — and that’s why the How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days star admitted in a new interview that having kids is basically all “trial and error” for parents.

“My life is just different [today]. I’m doing different things,” Kate, 39, said during a Thursday, Jan. 10 Today show appearance about being a new mom-of-three to baby Rani Rose Fujikawa, 3 months, and sons Ryder Robinson, 17, and Bingham Bellamy, 7. “Honestly, it’s like trial and error. The first one is the guinea pig. I’m definitely more responsible. I’m not messing up Rani as much as I messed up Ryder.”

During her Today interview, Kate also revealed that she’s likely not yet done having kids with her boyfriend, Danny Fujikawa, after welcoming daughter Rani this past October. “I always thought I’d have four to six kids. That was like, when I was really little, I thought that. When you come from a big family… you either don’t want kids or you want a lot of kids. So I always thought I’d have [more kids],” she said.

“At one point I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I’m done.’ And then I met Danny and was like, ‘Alright, I got to pump them out for him,'” Kate continued. “He needs a boy. He needs his own boy.”

In the meantime, we’ve loved watching Kate’s sons interact with their baby sister, Rani, on social media. “It’s quite amazing to watch because it’s a completely different generation,” she said of her kids. “[Ryder] looked at me and goes, ‘Mom, when I’m 30, [Rani] is going to be just turning 16.’ That’s wild, that I’ll have a 30-year-old kid and a child in high school.”

Kate also shared that Rani’s childhood will be much different than her firstborn’s upbringing. The blonde beauty dished that her oldest son lived the “nomad” lifestyle because she took him everywhere she went. Things changed, though, when Bingham came along.

Even though Kate has already been thinking about having more kids, the Almost Famous star revealed in late November that she is still getting used to the day-to-day aspects of having a new baby since welcoming Rani. “The routine with our baby is getting more familiar and I’m ready to start taking a little time in the day focusing on myself. For me, that means my health. Because I wanna be around a long time for these three kiddos of mine,” Kate revealed via Instagram.

“I know that some are curious about what that means and for all you moms (whether working or not working moms) it is the most challenging thing in the world to balance kids and personal time,” she wrote. “Let’s be honest, kids take the number one position and it’s hard to make the time for yourself.”
