Kate Hudson Says Her Strained Relationship With Dad Bill Hudson Has Negatively Affected Her Love Life

What a confession! Kate Hudson hasn’t always been lucky in love — and admits her strained relationship with her dad, Bill Hudson, has definitely contributed to her past failed marriage to Chris Robinson and broken engagement with Matt Bellamy. “I think that’s like the age-old psychological core issue for any situation,” the 38-year-old actress confessed in a recent radio interview. “Anybody who has had an experience with a parent that is absent, it’s going to manifest.”

Kate has been estranged from her father Bill, 68, since her mother, Goldie Hawn, divorced the singer in the early 1980s. “He was around when [my brother, Oliver Hudson, and I] were young, it sort of teetered out,” the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days star — who has always considered Goldie’s longtime boyfriend Kurt Russell to be her dad — has said of her relationship with Bill. Why did Bill Hudson and Goldie Hawn divorce?

According to Bill, Goldie cheated on him during their six-year marriage — they were hitched from 1976 until 1982 — and wanted an open relationship. Shortly after their union ended, the actress began dating Kurt in 1983 and the two have been together ever since.

In a past interview, Bill accused his ex-wife Goldie of “willfully alienating” him from their daughter Kate and son Oliver. “When we split up, she never had a bad word to say about me. But when Kurt came on the scene, the narrative changed and I became the big, bad wolf. Then, in 2015, Oliver took to Instagram to share a photo of himself with Bill and Kate for Father’s Day — but he captioned the pic “Happy Abandonment Day.” For Bill, Oliver’s post was the last straw. “That was like a dagger to the heart. If what he wanted was me out of their lives, then he’s succeeded. I don’t want to see either of my eldest children ever again. It’s over,” he said. “I say to them now, ‘I set you free. Oliver’s Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate. I am mourning their loss even though they are still walking this earth.”

Does Bill Hudson have other kids?

Yes, in addition to Kate and Oliver, Bill has three other children from two different relationships. After splitting with Goldie, the singer married Laverne & Shirley star Cindy Williams and the couple had kids Emily Hudson and Zachary Hudson.
