Uh oh. A clip from 2016 of The View cohost Joy Behar admitting to doing blackface years ago has resurfaced, and people are not happy. Especially in light of other recent controversies involving high-ranking political figures admitting to the same thing and causing an uproar, Joy, 76, is definitely in hot water right now.
The Wrap media editor Jon Levine shared the 2016 clip on Twitter, featuring the cohost showing her colleagues and the audience a photo of herself with curly hair when she was 29 as part of a discussion about the style coming back. However, she appears suspiciously darker than usual in the pic, and fellow former cohost Raven-Symoné took notice. It was then that Joy said, “I had makeup that was a little bit darker than my skin.” Watch The View clip below.

Joy explained that she dressed up as a “beautiful African woman” for Halloween decades ago, and no one at the table called that out as being problematic. A lot of people are upset because by comparison, as conservative writer Matt Walsh put it on Twitter, “Megyn Kelly was fired from her show for asking a hypothetical question about blackface. Joy actually wore blackface, and admitted it, and showed a picture of it on TV, yet she still has her job.”
Speaking of Twitter, a whole lot of people were up in arms over the revelation on the social media platform. “Why is okay for Joy to do this and not others? This is wrong even for Joy,” one person wrote. Another said, “She’s quick to throw everyone under the bus for less but her response is ‘oh my makeup was just a little darker than my skin.’”
However, others took a different approach. “Sorry to break it to all of you people thirsty for Joy Behar to be kicked off of The View, but this whole blackface thing is the biggest reach … her skin was barely darker and she had her own hair? Like damn, Ariana Grande has darkened her skin more.”
Joy has not yet responded to the controversy on Twitter. But as the discussion around the old photo continues, she may have to there or on the talk show. Stay tuned.
