After much speculation, George Clooney has finally set the record straight regarding the rampant rumor that he is the godfather of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s first royal baby, their son Archie.

The Catch-22 star, who many royal fans assumed would be given the title of godfather thanks to his close-knit friendship with the royal couple, addressed the hearsay while attending the premiere of his new Hulu show alongside his wife, Amal Clooney.

“Everybody loves their rumors. It’s not true,” George blatantly revealed to Extra on Tuesday, May 7. “You don’t want me to be a godparent of anybody. I’m barely a parent at this point. It’s frightening.”

The handsome heartthrob just celebrated his 57th birthday on Monday, May 6, which coincidentally fell on the same day that Meghan, 37, gave birth to Archie. George, who celebrated his special day at home with his loving wife and his 23-month-old twins, Ella and Alexander, joked that he wasn’t too thrilled about sharing a birthday with the little royal.

“It’s kind of irritating, if you think about it,” the Oscar-winning actor quipped with the outlet. “Because I’ve already had to split it with Orson Welles, Sigmund Freud and now this comes in. I’m moving down the line very quickly.” Ha!

Fans of the former Suits actress and Harry, 34, began wondering who they would choose to be the godparents to their first child after a royal source revealed that George and Amal, 41, were alleged “shoo-ins” for the role. Although neither couple commented on the topic — until now — royal fans were convinced that the Clooneys were a huge possibility considering their tight bond, as well as the fact that George has defended Meghan countless times.

Despite the two couples’ close relationship, Meghan and Amal were actually friends before the new mom ever even met Harry. “Amal and Meghan are much more friendly with each other and talk more regularly than George and Harry do,” a source revealed to E! News, following a few double dates. “They have become really close friends.”

The two couples reportedly began hanging out after George and Amal were invited to and dubbed as the most high-profile guests at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding in May 2018. Following the royal nuptials, the ER alum and his human rights lawyer wife allegedly invited the newlyweds for a vacation in Lake Como, Italy. So fun!

Even though George and Amal are officially off the list as godparents, we have no doubt that their kiddos could have the cutest playdates with Archie!
