Actress Zoe Saldana has taken steps to ensure that her home is a gender-neutral space for her three young sons.

“I’m always gonna be honest and that is always the best way to welcome healthy and truthful discourse, especially around parenthood,” the 40-year-old told Us Weekly on Tuesday, April 23. “[The twins] made a comment two weeks ago like, ‘Boys are stronger than girls,’ because they’re in that stage of comparisons. And you have to take a moment and kind of put together an answer that they will understand.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy star shares Cy and Bowie, 4, and Zen, 2, with her husband, Marco Perego, whom she married in 2013. Zoe also added that she keeps “female toys and male toys” in the household. But what is her goal in doing all this? “[To] not bring all this charge that you have as an adult and as a woman into their lives. They’re a blank slate,” she revealed.

Zoe is currently knee-deep in Avatar sequels, but she recently took some time off to spend with her family, as she is all about that. “There’s finally a light at the end of the tunnel and a break to be with Marco and the boys,” a friend close to the working mother recently told Star magazine. Zoe has had a busy schedule that has included films like My Little Pony: The Movie and I Kill Giants.

While Zoe is all about her family, she is not about aging — she recently spoke out against turning 41 years old this coming June. “You know, my mother said once when I was growing up, she goes, ‘I blinked and I was old,’” she recalled to People. “I was like, ‘Ew. It’s never gonna happen to me.’”

“I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s what that blink meant. That’s what she meant when she said, ‘I blinked,’” she continued, saying that the impact of aging is already taking its toll on her. “My knees hurt,” Zoe joked. “When I squat to pick up my children and I’m there for longer than a minute, I don’t just like bounce off like, ‘Hey!’ If I bounced off I’d pull a charley horse.”

She added, “My circulation isn’t as sharp. I drink one glass of wine and I hear voices … It’s not OK.” Even when she does turn 41, we know that Zoe will still have her family’s support!
