Of course, we already know the story. Eight-year-old Kevin McCallister gets left behind when his family goes off for a big family vacation. But during his time at home, he enjoys his newfound freedom and cleverly keeps a pair of burglars at bay. But what most of us probably don’t know is that the whole idea came from one writer’s experience with traveler’s anxiety while he was on a flight!

“On August 8, 1989, my father, John Hughes, jotted down in a notebook a movie idea, born of traveler’s anxiety, that occurred to him during the bustle of departing for our first family trip to Europe, and set it aside. Two weeks later, after returning home, he revisited the premise: What if one of the kids had been accidentally left behind?” the writer’s son, James Hughes once wrote.

And that was how literally everyone’s favorite Christmas comedy was born! It’s so fascinating to see where the hugely successful movie began, but you’ll be even more intrigued by all of these behind-the-scenes details about the film!
