It has been just six months since Gwyneth Paltrow said “I do” to Brad Falchuk, but the actress recently revealed that she didn’t exactly see herself getting married again before her future husband stepped into her life, but she’s thankful he did.

“I guess if you’d asked me a couple of years ago I probably would have leaned towards not getting married again, but then sometimes life just surprises you and it’s been really fun,” the 46-year-old said during a recent appearance on Today. She continued, “I’m so happy that I was sort of given this other opportunity.”

This is the Oscar winner’s second marriage. Her first was with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and they share two children together, Apple, 14, and Moses, 12. The pair split up in 2016 in what Gwyneth famously called a “conscious uncoupling.”

The Shakespeare in Love star touched on that during her Today interview, too. “Both Chris and I have made a commitment to continue to love the things about each other that we’ve always loved and to really continue to develop our friendship and to find ways to continue to communicate,” she said. “There’s been a long process to it, at some point maybe I’ll write a book because you really have to focus on forgiveness and spite that comes up, you have to let it go.”

She added, “It’s definitely not effortless, but now at this point, five years later, it’s pretty good, but the first couple of years it was very effortful and for the sake of the children, we were really committed to maintaining the family structure … even though it looked a bit different.”

And all is well for the former couple as not only are they great coparents, but they actually seem like very close friends. Just recently, Gwyneth wished her ex a happy 42nd birthday on Instagram. “This is a special one,” she captioned a photo of the two together. “We love you so much.” That shoutout came one day after the Goop founder sent her current man some birthday wishes too.

“You are my rock, my true north, my favorite person to eat with, to travel with. You are a true friend. You want only what is for the highest good. You always help me see what I can’t,” she captioned a photo of the two. “I am so happy you were born @bradfalchuk I love you so much.”
