She says the end of Grey's Anatomy is "nearing," but star Ellen Pompeo isn't ready to scrub out of the longtime series just yet. In fact, the 48-year-old already has an idea about what she'd like to see on Grey's Anatomy Season 15 now that ABC has renewed the medical drama for another year.

"I'd like to get into neurological diseases, and disease in general, and talk about what's causing it," Ellen told E! News during a new interview. "What we're ingesting, what we're inhaling, the chemicals that are in our food, water, air — what really is making people sick. I'd love to deal with that. I don't know if that's a popular thing on network television, and sponsors may not like that, so I don't know that we'll do that. We can't be so political, right? We're half rom-com, half procedural, but I would like to tackle the issue of illness and the chemicals in our environment that are poisoning the planet and our people."

Ellen previously touched on this topic last month when she revealed that she and her family had gone vegan. "I think we're at a critical point for our planet, and in the United States, this health issue is out of control," she told People at the time. "The obesity, the diabetes, everything… Sickness is a huge business. I know that really, really well. The message of veganism is not one that they want to get out, but not only will it help us, it helps the planet."

We wouldn't be surprised if Ellen, Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes, and showrunner Krista Vernoff pulled off the public health storyline next season, given all the sway they have. Grey's is still ABC's top drama among 18 to 49-year-olds, and the show has used its massive platform to tackle hot-button issues like DACA, police brutality, and #MeToo during its current season.

That said, Season 15 might be the show's swan song. "There is an end, and it's nearing," Ellen told Us Weekly earlier this week. "We're getting there. Shonda and I will make that decision together... I want to be more involved in my kids' lives as they get older and they need me more, and this world is such a crazy place."
