Ellen Pompeo Says End of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Is “Nearing” (Check Us Into Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, Please!)

Calling all Grey’s Anatomy fans! The long-running show — it first premiered in 2005 and is currently in its 14th season — has been on for 13 years, so it makes sense that dedicated viewers of the medical drama want to know if the show is ending anytime soon. Scroll down to get your questions answered.

Is Grey’s Anatomy ending?

Maybe! After all this time, Grey’s still remains one of the most popular shows on television. Despite Patrick Dempsey‘s abrupt exit during the show’s 11th season, they still have a way of keeping their viewers (like ourselves) coming back for more every Thursday night. However, the series’ star Ellen Pompeo (aka Meredith Grey) just suggested that “there is an end and it’s nearing,” even though she wouldn’t share her idea of how it will conclude.

“We’re getting there. Shonda and I will make that decision together,” she told Us Weekly of the show that’s already been renewed for Season 15. “I think that one of the biggest lessons that this show has taught me and being on this show for so long has taught me, is that relationships do change. And they do grow. They take work. Like any marriage, friendship. You gotta put in the work. You have to accept other people’s flaws, and accept your own flaws and try to change and be a better person. But I think everything is worth the time and effort. And things get better.”

Now that Ellen’s three kids, Stella, 8, Sienna, 3, and Eli, 1, are getting older, it seems the actress may want to put Grey’s on the backburner to spend more time with them. “I want to be more involved in my kids’ lives as they get older. And they need me more, and this world is such a crazy place,” she confessed.

However, it’s unclear what will happen since ABC Chief Channing Dungey says she’s optimistic that Greys will produce many, many more episodes in the future (we might as well just admit ourselves to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital!). She additionally confessed she’d love to beat out their rival series, ER, which previously ran for 15 seasons.

“That’d be lovely,” Dungey recently said to Entertainment Weekly about hitting that milestone. “I’ll take even more! Honestly, I think that the show is going to continue as long as [the show’s writer Shonda Rhimes] and the gang have a creative passion for telling those stories. At the moment, it feels like we’re full steam ahead.”

“What Shonda and the team at Grey’s have really been able to do over time is continue to bring in new characters that give the series additional life and energy while remaining true to the core cast of characters,” Dungey continued.

But don’t worry, Ellen has a plan if Grey’s ends sooner rather than later. “I am really into producing, I love producing,” she shared. “It’s like one problem after another, it’s problem-solving 101. It’s like a great experiment in problem-solving. Acting is… it’s a young girl’s game. You’ve gotta travel, you’ve gotta be away. [You’ve] gotta go here and work at night in the rain. I’m not saying I’ll never do it. If there’s an amazing opportunity I’m sure, of course I’ll do it.” We’d miss Meredith Grey and the rest of the doctors if the show went off the air, that’s for sure!
