It was thirty-six years ago that Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson first hand-jived into our lives, and we're still hopelessly devoted to this coming-of-age story decades after its release!
In celebration of the musical's anniversary, here are the reasons why we still love Grease!
- The first musical number gets us every time
"Summer Nights" is a great kick-off for a love story. Not only did it perfectly convey the gossip culture of high school, but it also showed how boys and girls differ when sharing details of a date. Plus, it got us pumped to see how Danny and Sandy's relationship would unfold.
- Danny Zuko is still the ultimate bad boy
Greased back hair, leather jacket and that overly confident strut. Yes, Danny — played by the talented John Travolta — is still a heartthrob in our eyes! Though he pretends not to care, we can see that beneath all those layers of black he has a big heart!
- We can't get enough of Olivia Newton-John's transformation scene
Yes, there was controversy surrounding this ending with many questioning why Sandy had to change and become more like Danny. But who are we kidding? Those skintight leather pants, the big hair and red high heels are everything and still make for a killer Halloween costume!
- It may be a musical, but there's still action
That race scene is no joke! First Kenickie gets knocked out then the creepy Scorpion brings razor blades to the party. We were on the edge of our seats as they drove up the walls of that underpass, but luckily, Danny brought home a victory for the T-Birds.
- It doesn't shy away from real-life situations
We know moms weren't too thrilled by the abundance of underage drinking and teen pregnancy storyline in the 1978 flick, but that's why we love Grease. Those things happen in real-life so why pretend like they don't? It's a true coming-of-age film.
- Reminds us of the bonds we made in high school
Despite their differences and a few bumps along the way, the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies knew the true meaning of friendship and stuck by each other through thick and thin. Whether dealing with a break-up or possible pregnancy, the gang was there to provide words of encouragement.
- It's just plain fun!
The entire soundtrack can easily be sung at karaoke! Plus the dance sequences are phenomenal and every time you watch, a new joke or reference seems to jump out. It's the perfect summer flick that ends at a carnival for goodness sake! What's more fun then that?!
