The legendary hockey player died at age 88 on Friday, June 10, his son Marty Howe confirmed to CNN Sports.

Gordie’s health had been declining in recent years following his 2012 diagnosis with dementia. He then suffered two debilitating strokes in October 2014.

Throughout his iconic NHL hockey career, Gordie — who played for the Detroit Red Wings for 25 of his 26 professional seasons — earned records for being the second all-time leading goal scorer and pro with the most games (1,767) and seasons played.
