Thank you for being a friend! Rejoice Golden Girls fans, because a reboot of the hit show is in the works. Now, you might be wondering how the iconic sitcom will be revived when Betty White is the last living “girl” among the bunch. According to Unicorn Booty, James Berg and Stan Zimmerman, two of the writers from the show, are in the process of creating a pilot about four older gay men living together.
“Every one of us is getting older,” Stan explained. “Especially with gays and lesbians and transgender, we create our own families — and that’s what The Golden Girls did. Those women came together and supported each other.”
The show is rumored to be titled Silver Foxes and the writers are already pitching it to streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. The show doesn’t have a cast yet but would follow the same format as Golden Girls as the characters navigate dating, family life, friendship, and aging.
Writing a show focusing on men is a departure for James and Stan who have made their careers by writing about strong female characters. The two have also worked on shows such as Roseanne and Gilmore Girls, but the show would be groundbreaking for exactly that reason. Reports show that there are over three million LGBTQ senior citizens in the United States — but how often are those people main characters on TV? Even though Silver Foxes is different from the original show, it sounds like it will be as funny and entertaining. We can’t wait to watch!
