She won a Tony for playing a legendarily reclusive actress in the Broadway musical Sunset Boulevard, and in real life, Glenn Close says, “Being alone has never been a challenge for me. I’m an introvert by nature.”

That’s why she hasn’t minded being cooped up in a house she owns in Montana during the coronavirus crisis. “It’s little and I love it,” says Glenn. “For a while there, I was lounging around in my pajamas all day until I thought, ‘Hmm, I don’t know about this,'” she admits. “Now, I get dressed, come down, let [my dog] Pip out and give him his breakfast and make some for myself.”

Not that she’s a gourmet. “My comfort food has been popcorn, Popsicles and scrambled eggs,” she says, adding with a laugh, “I baked some banana bread the other day, not realizing I was the only one who could eat it.”

Glenn’s house is right next door to her younger sister Jessie’s, and her other sister Tina and brother Sandy also live nearby. Though she’s been self-isolating lately, Glenn did celebrate turning 73 with her family on March 19 (she also posted a photo of herself trudging through the wintry landscape in snowshoes). “To see my siblings on my birthday, I don’t have any memory of the last time that happened — it was really, really special,” she says. “I have lived on the East Coast my whole life.”

The coronavirus crisis has also reminded Glenn about the importance of altruism. “Think of the doctors and nurses right now — they’re sacrificing for the good of the whole,” she says. “You can’t have a successful society without altruism, and yet we’ve moved away from it. We live on how we connect — let’s focus on connection.”

Once life returns to some normalcy, “I look forward to a great celebration,” Glenn says. “I don’t know when that will be when we’re all allowed out of the house — we may have to be careful for a long time.”

She also can’t wait to get back to work. “By the end of the year, I really would love to get to work on the movie based on Sunset Boulevard the musical,” she says. “That’s always on my mind, and I think we’re getting closer.”
