Well, this is unexpected.

In the days following the 89th Annual Academy Awards, surprising new details have been revealed about Oscars breakout star “Gary From Chicago.”

According to ABC 7 Chicago, the now-famous tourist — whose real name is Gary Alan Coe — was released from prison just three days before he appeared at the Oscars.

Coe told the news outlet that he served 20 years in jail for multiple felonies. “Change is possible. It’s a sad day to be in prison for 20 years and not be able to be a dad, granddad to your children,” he said.

“You know what my son told me today, man, and I almost come to tears. He said he’s proud of me,” he continued. “So to hear your children say that they’re proud of me means the world to me.”

Prison records state that Coe was previously admitted to California’s Corcoran Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in 1994. A man with Coe’s name is registered as a sex offender in California for attempted rape by force or fear.

Coe became a viral sensation on Sunday, Feb. 26 when Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel unloaded an unsuspecting group of LA tourists into the Dolby Theater during the Oscars.

Coe — clad in a black Hollywood hoodie and a matching baseball cap — and his fiancée, Vickie Vines, were in the front of the tourist batch and garnered tons of laughs when they met A-list stars including Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Aniston, and Ryan Gosling at the event.

At one point, Jimmy had Vines’ favorite actor, Denzel Washington, come to the front of the crowd to meet the Chicago couple. “I’ve been watching Denzel since he was on St. Elsewhere. Oh my god. I could die and go to heaven right now,” she later said of meeting the star.

While speaking to ABC 7 Chicago, Coe additionally revealed he and Vines met while he was serving time in prison. The couple now plan to marry this summer in California.
