Iconic Game Show Host Wink Martindale, 85, Doesn’t Believe in Retirement: It’s ‘Not in My Vocabulary’
At 85, Wink Martindale shows no signs of slowing down.
“Retirement is not in my vocabulary,” the game show host told Closer Weekly in an exclusive new interview, on newsstands now, from the 2019 Daytime Emmy Awards in L.A. on Sunday, May 5. “The great Art Linkletter was once asked if he ever thought about retiring, and he said, ‘Why? I’m not tired!’ That’s the way I feel,” the former Tic-Tac-Dough host added.
In fact, Wink says he hopes to produce and host another game show. “I’m developing one now called Hit Me! that’s based off the game blackjack,” he reports. “And I have another one I’d love to host called Home Free, where you can actually win a home and have your mortgage paid off.”
“It’s because I love what I do, and I love this lady,” Wink said of the secret to staying young and turning to Sandy, his wife of 43 years. He and Sandy were married in August 1975 and is a second marriage for him. He was previously wed to Madelyn Leech — with whom he shares four children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren from 1954 to 1972.
“We have a wonderful life, and I think that’s why I have so much energy,” Wink — who also hosted Gambit, High Rollers and Debt and has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — gushed.
“I’ve brought a lot of fun, entertainment and happiness into homes across the world,” he said, noting that he is able to look back and be proud of all that he has accomplished throughout the years. “I still love what I’m doing, and that’s being a part of [the game show] business.”
