In April 2016, Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman confirmed their separation after nearly four years of marriage — but many fans are still wondering, what was the actual cause of the couple’s divorce?

At the time, the former duo was vague about the reason for their breakup in their joint statement. “Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family,” they said. “Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually, you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on.”

Shortly after their public announcement, Drew told the emotional story behind their eventual choice to go their separate ways. “I had a really hard time a couple of months ago and kind of knew life was heading in a new direction,” she revealed. “I called someone that I really trust, respect, and believe in, because he has always been the conductor of grace. I said, ‘What’s your advice?’ And he said, ‘You put one foot in front of the other.’ I hung up the phone and I thought, ‘That is why I call this person.'”

Although Drew, 42, has candidly admitted she’s happy following their split, she’s also called herself a “failure.” “I put in my statement about divorce the word ‘failure’ because it’s so honest,” the actress revealed in May 2016. “Like, when you get divorced, you break up with somebody and you’re like, ‘Yeah, that didn’t work,’ and you get divorced, [but] when you get divorced you’re like, ‘I’m the biggest failure. This is the biggest failure.’ It’s so shameful and hard to actually go through that, even privately.”
