Donnie Wahlberg Says This Is the End of ‘Blue Bloods’ ‘For Now’: ‘No Regrets’ Ahead of Series Finale

Donnie Wahlberg knows that the ending of Blue Bloods will be emotional for those watching at home, but he shared a hopeful update about the future of the franchise.

In a post shared on Instagram on Wednesday, December 11, Donnie, 55, wrote a touching caption ahead of the show’s series finale. But there was one part that really caught his fans’ attention.

“Only one #BlueBloods Friday left. Hard to believe we’ve come to the finale, but then it’s hard to believe that we were fortunate enough to be part of something so special for the last fourteen years!” he wrote alongside some photos from the finale episode ahead of its Friday, December 13, date. “Lots of emotion swirling, as I’m sure they are for all of you loyal fans and followers of this show. I say farewell (for now) with no regrets — only gratitude! Let’s celebrate the journey together, one last time, this Friday.”

This isn’t the first time he has hinted that Blue Bloods or its characters might return in some capacity in the future.

On December 6, he shared a post on X ahead of the penultimate episode of the series.

“Only two #BlueBloods episodes left – the first of those two begins right now! Let’s get to it!” Donnie wrote. One fan responded to the post, writing, “Thank goodness for reruns.” He replied back to the fan, saying, “True. or even spinoffs.”

Another person said, “Maybe there can be a #Bluebloods movie with a ton of sequels!!! I would go see that #Bluebloods.” This prompted Donnie to respond, “I like that plan.”

The idea of a spinoff has been tossed around by several of the show’s cast members ever since CBS announced that season 14 of Blue Bloods would be its last. After dominating the Friday night ratings on the network for more than a decade, ending the series has been hard to accept.

In particular, fans have been hoping that Donnie would return as Danny Reagan for a spinoff. But because the Blue Bloods finale has yet to air, it feels a little too early for CBS to decide if any of the characters’ stories will continue.

“We don’t have anything that’s going to be in development soon but it’s a brand, a title and a show that is beloved,” CBS Studios President David Stapf told Deadline back in July. “We’ve got to get it right so we’re taking our time and trying to figure it out, OK, what is the next iteration of Blue Bloods? We have a whole season to go where we intend to celebrate it all season long as to how good that show is, so there’s still time for us to figure that out.”

Leading man Tom Selleck also addressed spinoff speculation, saying that he would be open to it only if it meant his character, Frank Reagan, was still working in NYC.

“I’m open to suggestions because I love Frank Reagan, but nobody’s really asked,” Tom, 79, told Parade in an interview published on December 6. “I don’t see him retiring and going off somewhere. If he goes off to a small town, I’d rather do more Jesse Stone movies.”
