Laura Dern’s Mom Diane Ladd Loves Being a Grandmother, but Don’t Call Her “Grandma!”
She may be a renowned actress, but in-between takes, Laura Dern’s mom, Diane Ladd, is working at her favorite job — being a grandmother! However, the 81-year-old has one request when it comes to the role.
“I don’t love being [called] Grandma. I feel like Shirley MacLaine now — don’t say Grandma,” Diane told Closer Weekly in a new interview. “I’m Nana Rose! I have eight grandchildren and two step grandchildren, and I love them all.” So sweet!

The Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore actress has been married three times. First, she was hitched to Bruce Dern from 1960 until 1969 and the couple is parents to daughter Laura, 50. She then wed William A. Shea, Jr. in 1969 and stayed with him until 1977. She married Robert Charles Hunter in 1999 and the two are still together today.
Diane currently stars as grandmother Nell O’Brien on the Hallmark Channel series Chesapeake Shores. “She has grandchildren and loves her family, and I have grandchildren and love my family. She’s an outgoing, caring person, and I would like to think I’m the same,” she gushed of her role in the show.

In real life, she’s having a blast sharing her wisdom with her grandchildren. “I think the youth today has a hard time,” she told Closer. “We all need to sit them on our shoulders and help guide them in the hope they can make the world a little bit better than we have.”
And even though she’s a grandma (Sorry, Diane for saying it!), she still knows how to keep her youth. “I’m always trying something new. Sometimes I’ll go to the gym, stretch at home, walk,” she told Closer in a previous interview. “The thing I love the best is swimming, but the most important thing is to laugh, love yourself and make your heart happy.”
