Wait, are Michael Keaton and Diane Keaton related?

Because the two stars share the same last name, many fans have wondered if Diane, 71, and Michael, 65, have a familial bond. But, the actors are actually not related at all!

Interestingly, Keaton isn’t even Michael or Diane’s real surname. Crazy, right?

Diane was born Diane Hall on Jan. 5, 1946, in LA. After dropping out of college, the future star moved to NYC to pursue an acting career. When she subsequently joined the Actors’ Equity Association, she changed her last name to Keaton — which is her mother’s maiden name — because there was already an actress with the name Diane Hall.

Michael was born Michael Douglas — doesn’t that name sound familiar? — on Sept. 5, 1951, in Coraopolis, PA. When he moved from Pennsylvania to LA to begin acting, the rising star adopted the stage name Michael Keaton because there was already an actor and a daytime TV host registered in the Screen Actors Guild with his birth name.

It was once rumored that Michael chose Keaton as his stage last name because he was a big fan of actress Diane. However, the Beetlejuice star later confirmed he picked the surname to honor Hollywood comedian Buster Keaton.
