So Cool!Dakota Johnson Reveals ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ Has a Surprise Tribute to Her Mom Melanie Griffith

While Melanie Griffith may have refused to watch her daughter’s performance in the first Fifty Shades film, Dakota Johnson has revealed there’s a sneaky scene that pays tribute to her famous mom in the sequel Fifty Shades Darker!

The 27-year-old actress — who is Melanie’s only child with Miami Vice star Don Johnson — infamously had a spat with her mom about the x-rated flick.

On the 2015 Oscars red carpet, Melanie let it slip to reporters that she hadn’t, nor did she have any desire to see her daughter’s breakthrough role in Fifty Shades of Grey.

The 59-year-old mused that she didn’t need to watch Dakota bring to life the character of Anastasia Steele “to know how good” of an actress she is. To be fair, we don’t know how many moms would willingly want to see their child in such… shall we say compromising positions.

If the first film is anything to go by, Dakota doubts her mom will watch Fifty Shades Darker either — but that didn’t stop the actress from slipping in a little something that was inspired by her legendary mother.

During a Wednesday, Feb. 3 appearance on Today, the starlet revealed there’s a scene in the movie that pays tribute to Melanie. “There is a moment — there is a little surprise moment especially for my mom in this movie,” Dakota told Hoda Kotb.

Sadly, she didn’t clue her into what we need to look out for… But our eyes are peeled for a Working Girl montage! “I can’t share it! I don’t want to spoil it, but she won’t ever see it. Maybe she’ll see this one specific little clip,” Dakota said.

“It’s kind of an homage to your mom in some way?” Hoda asked. “Will people watching it understand it right when it happens?”

“I think so,” Dakota replied. “I hope so.”
