Breaking up isn’t always an easy thing to do but for Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid, it actually made their relationship stronger. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday, January 29Courteney, 54, explained that breaking off her engagement to Johnny, 42, back in 2015 ultimately made them both realize how much they wanted to reconcile.

“He’s not my fiancé. We were engaged to be married, but now we’re just together,” Courteney revealed to host Ellen DeGeneres. “We broke off our engagement, and he moved to England, then we got back together, and it’s actually better than it was before.”

“Everything’s better,” she added. “Not because he’s in London — although I think the distance after that breakup, we were apart for six months, that really showed us a lot. It’s just better.” Since Courteney lives in the U.S., the pair has been spending a lot of money just to see each other on a regular basis. “I mean, it’s expensive,” Courteney told Ellen. “That’s an expensive relationship! We go back and forth a lot.”

During a previous Jimmy Kimmel Live! interview, Courteney explained that although she and Johnny are in a better place now, she doesn’t like to call the Snow Patrol musician her “partner.”

“He’s my partner. That’s what he calls it, my partner. And I’m from Alabama, so you don’t really say partner unless you’re in the same sex,” she admitted. “He’s my guy, he’s my one, but saying partner’s difficult for me.”

“I was in Atlanta not that long ago and I was like, ‘Oh, I’m supposed to meet my partner in section F,’ and they were like, ‘Oh, I’m sure she’s going to be there, don’t worry about it,’” the star recalled. “Not that it matters, but it’s just a different way to speak.”

We’re so happy Courteney and Johnny are doing great today — they make the cutest couple!
