Everyone's favorite HGTV show almost wasn't meant to be! Chip Gaines and Joanna Gaines' beloved Fixer Upper didn't get off to the greatest start with the network, and the show's pilot episode came very close to not getting picked up. Luckily, that didn't happen! Six years later, the married duo have certainly made a name for themselves in the design world. Check out the video above to see how much the designer and contractor have changed since the filming of the first episode!

Seriously, where has the time gone? Back when they were first testing out the show, HGTV clearly didn't know what they — or the world — needed, and almost decided to pass on Chip and Jo. During the Tuesday, March 6 episode, perfectly titled "How We Got Here," the two explained how they managed to impress the design network.

In the clip, Chip surprised Jo with an interesting Mother's Day present: a dilapidated houseboat! "Ta-da! This is where we’re going to live for a couple of months," the now-43-year-old excitedly exclaimed. Jo, not sure if he was being serious or not, just asked, "Baby, really, is this a joke?"

"Chip is like that kid, like the five-year-old kid that’s trying to make his mom breakfast and there’s milk everywhere," the mom-of-four adorably said to the camera after the incident. "Good heart, big mistake. But what do you do? You don’t want to spank him!" It must've been Chip and Jo's hilarious relationship that warmed the hearts of the HGTV producers, because they soon got a TV deal!

And the rest is history. Fixer Upper became one of the highest rated HGTV series of all time, and Chip and Joanna became the definition of couple goals. Now in its fifth and final season, the Fixer Upper era is sadly coming to a close, but that doesn't mean we won't be seeing more of Chip and Jo! The two are currently expecting their fifth baby — a boy! — and are working on many more fun projects. One thing's for sure, pretty much everyone's super grateful HGTV chose to bring Fixer Upper — and Chip and Jo — into our lives!
