During an appearance on the Today show, co-anchors Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie asked Caroline if her gown took convincing to wear. “I had to convince everyone else!” she replied. “[The dress’ designer] is actually also somebody who is willing to go against the popular grain and do what she thought it right and courageous. So I think we can look for great individuals with the courage to do what they think is right.”

Though many people criticized the 59-year-old’s bold outfit, others lauded Caroline for perfectly honoring this year’s Met Gala theme. The event paid tribute to Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo — and Caroline’s frock was created by Rei herself as part of her Comme des Garçons line.

For the special outing, Caroline was accompanied by her 24-year-old son, Jack Schlossberg, who looked dapper in a classic black and white tuxedo. Last evening was the first time the late John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy Onassis‘ daughter attended the Met Gala since 2001.

This year’s Met Gala theme was especially close to Caroline’s heart as she served as the US Ambassador to Japan under former President Barack Obama from July 2013 until January 2017. The author is also a personal friend of Rei.

“There is something about the uncompromising originality of her work, the commitment to excellence, the attention to detail, and the closeness of her team that embodies the sensibility of Japan,” Caroline recently said of the designer. “In today’s world, where we each need to figure out what we believe in, and how to stand for something, this exhibition has a lot to teach us.”
