Blue Bloods Fans Hope Underdog Character Gets Future Spinoff
“Life Sentence” – The Reagans’ professional lives converge when an allegation of jury tampering against Erin intertwines with Danny and Baez’s homicide case and Eddie’s bond to a child murder witness; Frank clashes with his friend and confidant Archbishop Kearns over the death penalty; and when Jamie’s car is stolen, he joins forces with his nephew, Joe Hill, to recover it. Stacy Keach, Peter Hermann and Will Hochman guest star on the 14th season, part two premiere of BLUE BLOODS, Friday, Oct. 18 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. Blue Bloods fans have tossed around a lot of good ideas for a potential spinoff. However, there’s one that really sticks out among the rest.

‘Blue Bloods’ Fans Want a Joe Hill Spinoff

It seems like no Blue Bloods character has had greater development than Joe Hill, portrayed by Will Hochman. The character first appeared in season 10, as the son of Joe Regan and Paula Hill. He followed in his father’s footsteps to become a detective, and began building relationships with his biological family members once he learned his lineage.

But at first, it wasn’t easy to fit in with the rest of the headstrong Reagan crew. There was some major animosity between him and other members of the NYPD, as well as members of his own family. He has definitely had his fair share of ups and downs with both Danny and Jamie Reagan. It kind of feels like he was never given a fair chance, and a spinoff would be the perfect way to explore his character a bit more.

Other Candidates for ‘Blue Bloods’ Spinoff

In season 14, Jamie and his wife, Eddie Janko-Reagan, voiced that they would like to move out of NYC. She said she wanted to go somewhere with “more space and cheaper everything.” They also want to start a family. How fun would it be to see a spinoff navigating their new lives together away from the Big Apple?

However, Vanessa Ray, who portrays Eddie, hinted that she was not so sure a spinoff would work for Eddie and Jamie.

“I don’t know what world it would make sense for Eddie to be in a spinoff at all,” she told TV Insider in October 2024. “But if they need to put me in a wig and dye my eyebrows and I’ll play a different character just so I get to hang out with all of them more, then I’ll do it.”

“Past Is Present” – Danny reunites with a troublesome teenager from a past case when the youth finds herself in danger. Also, Frank faces a difficult personnel decision close to home; Jamie grows suspicious when Henry is asked to be interviewed for an investigative Web series; and Erin and Anthony investigate when Erin is the alleged target of a shooting, on BLUE BLOODS, Friday, March 15 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. Will Hochman Reflected on Blue Bloods’ Final Season

Amid the show’s final season, Will spoke out on how much Joe was learning from working with Danny and Jamie in the line of duty.

“Since Joe first met his Reagan family, he’s gone through a steady whirlwind of change and, importantly, growth,” the New York native told TV Insider in November 2024. “The more cases he works with his family, the more he learns not only about the job but about himself. He has, thankfully, matured. There has been less to prove and more to give and so much of that growth has come from working with Danny and Jamie on the job, and from the meaningful conversations they share in those in-between moments.”

He also teased Joe’s ending for the series and how his storyline would ultimately wrap up.

“I’m not sure how much I’m allowed to say. But I will offer that the five seasons that Joe has been a character on Blue Bloods has been a necessary journey for him,” he said, one month before the show’s series finale was set to air on CBS. “Joe had so much to learn. So did I. The show ends with Joe having arrived more fully into his own life, feeling grateful for this group of people he finally gets to call his family. He gets to claim them as his own and be claimed as one of theirs.”
