Better late than never! Have you ever written a fan letter? Ever waited almost 50 years for a response? Well, that’s exactly what happened to actor Richard E. Grant as he finally received a message back from Barbra Streisand years after he wrote the music icon a note as a teen.

The Oscar-nominated actor, 61, recently took to Twitter to reveal that when he was just 14 years old, he wrote a very sweet letter to the singer and performer, 76. “As a lifelong fan of someone, you’ll understand what it meant for me to take this snap outside the home of @BarbraStreisand,” he wrote in the tweet. “Asked Security for permission & he replied, ‘It’s a public road, but thanks for asking.’ Wrote her this letter when I was 14. My wife is very understanding!” See Richard’s tweet below!

In his letter, the Can You Ever Forgive Me? star penned, “Since seeing Funny Girl we, my family, that is, and I have been very big fans. I have followed your career avidly. We have all your records. I am 14 years old. I read in the paper you were feeling very tired and pressurized by your fame and failed romance with Mr. Ryan O’Neal. I would like to offer you a two-week holiday, or longer, at our house, which is very beautiful with a pool and a magnificent view of Ezulwini Valley. Here you can rest. No one will trouble you.”

Unfortunately for Richard, he never received a response from the Oscar winner … until now! “What a wonderful letter you wrote me when u were 14! And look at u now!” Barbra wrote on Twitter on January 29. “You’re terrific in your latest movie with Melissa [McCarthy]. Congratulations and love, Barbra.”

“Am completely crinkle faced & overcome with emotion,” Richard tweeted in response. “My ‘Message in a bottle’ miracle.” Richard may win Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards on Sunday, February 24, but something tells us that this is already a bigger win for the actor and life-long Barbra superfan!
