Still missing her furry friend. Barbra Streisand opened up about the death of her dog and longtime companion Sammie during a Monday, Nov. 20, interview with the Associated Press. According to the 75-year-old Grammy winner, the emotional aftermath of Sammie’s passing was far worse than she expected it to be.

“She was always with me; the last 14 years she went everywhere I went,” the singer said of the precious Coton de Tulear. “She was at every performance. It was like losing a child. It was kind of awful.”

Sammie died at age 14 this past May. At the time, Barbra paid tribute to her pup in a touching Instagram post. “This is the last time my picture was taken with my beloved girl Samantha,” she captioned a photo of herself and Sammie snuggling up next to each other on Mother’s Day. “May she rest in peace. We cherish every moment of the 14 years we had with her. May 2003 — May 2017.”

Just days prior, the iconic musician celebrated Sammie’s birthday by sharing an adorable pic of the dog playing with a new toy, accompanied by the following caption: “Happy 14th birthday dear little Sammie.”

As Barbra’s fans are well aware, the animal-loving superstar often shared sweet snaps of herself and Sammie on social media. However, in October 2016, the New York native revealed that the cute canine’s health was declining, and asked fans for prayers while her four-legged bestie underwent surgery.

In 2013, Barbra described the bond she and Sammie shared. “She’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen,” the pet enthusiast gushed. “She’s like the daughter I never hand. She speaks English. She understands English, I swear to God. She always comes with us [when we travel]. I would never leaver her.”
