Anne Hathaway Reveals She’s Quit Drinking for the Next 18 Years Because Her Young Son ‘Really Does Need Me’
A ton of things changed for Anne Hathaway the day she became a mother. And since she welcomed her first child, son Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman, with husband Adam Shulman in March 2016, things are still changing every day for the actress. In a new interview with Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday, January 22, the Serenity star revealed the latest difference in her life is that she recently gave up drinking alcohol cold turkey.
“For 18 years. I’m gonna stop drinking while my son is living in my house,” the 36-year-old star proclaimed. According to our calculations, Anne won’t be enjoying a glass of wine or a casual cocktail until she’s 52 because Jonathan is only turning 3 years old this March!
If you’re questioning why Anne has decided to stop drinking alcohol, well, she offered a pretty good reason. In addition to admitting that she doesn’t “totally love the way” she drinks, Anne explained to Ellen that her baby son is “getting to an age where he really does need me all the time, in the mornings.”
Anne went on to explain that her decision to give up booze was also based on a night out that she recently shared with her newest costar, Matthew McConaughey. The mom-of-one revealed that she, Matthew and his wife, Camila Alves, went drinking in-between takes while filming their movie Serenity but when she woke up the next morning for a meeting, Anne wasn’t feeling too hot.
And it wasn’t the only time Anne has been hungover when she had important business to take care of. “I did one school run one day where I dropped him off at school,” she told Ellen. “I wasn’t driving, but I was hungover. That was enough for me. I didn’t love that [experience].” Ellen, 60, then joked, “Another reason I don’t want kids. I’m not quittin’ drinking!”
When Matthew similarly paid Ellen a visit on her show earlier this week, the How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days star also told a funny story about Anne showing up to his 49th birthday party a day late.
“My birthday’s on the fourth of November, so we had the party that night. And I didn’t notice, but the Hathaways didn’t show up,” the 49-year-old hunk explained. “The next day, wake up, I was still in my robe around 5:00 p.m., the time that we had started the party the day before, and the doorbell rings. It’s Anne, and they’ve got a bottle of wine, they’ve got balloons, a gift, and I’m like, ‘Great! Come on in.'” Despite Anne getting her days mixed up, Matthew said he, his wife, Anne and her husband still hung out until 2:00 a.m. How fun!
