‘Alarm’ Over ‘Jeopardy!’ Ratings Putting ‘Pressure’ on Ken Jennings: ‘Not Giving Up Without a Fight’

Ken Jennings continues to suffer as his hosting duties fall flat in the ratings department, with Celebrity Jeopardy! pulling in a record low audience number in recently revealed stats, and a source exclusively tells Closer the pressure has never been higher for him to prove his worth and turn the struggling show around. 

Since taking over the big job after the death of iconic host Alex Trebek in 2020 and winning out over then-cohost Mayim Balik for the solo gig, the well-known Jeopardy! champion, 50, has faced a slew of criticism as the show struggles without its long-time staple presenter. Despite the backlash, the source notes, “Ken is committed to staying. He’s not giving up without a fight, but there is alarm within the network over these terrible numbers.” 

According to Nielsen Ratings data detailing numbers from episodes aired earlier this year, Celebrity Jeopardy! dipped under 2 million viewers in January, marking its lowest since 2022, and was beaten in a head to head by its main competitor The Price Is Right At Night.

“The pressure is obviously on Ken, as the face of the franchise, and also on everybody else around him, to up their game and try and turn things around,” the insider adds. “Ken’s doing his best to stay positive and staying true to the principles he learned from Alex.” 

“He’s telling people that it’s just a phase, that there are always highs and lows, and they’ll get through it. But the reality is there’s only so long it can go like this before the bosses get too nervous to wait it out, so it really does remain to be seen whether he’ll get a chance to do this long term or whether they’ll turn to someone with more fame to boost their ratings.” 

As Closer previously reported, Ken’s job is already in jeopardy as Wheel of Fortune host Ryan Seacrest carries the series to new heights in a similar situation after beloved host Pat Sajak stepped down to enjoy his retirement. 

“Ryan’s looking like the game-show golden boy right now, despite a bumpy first week, and all Ken can do is hope for a miracle to turn the tide in his favor,” a second source said of the situation. “Surely, it’s just a matter of time [until] when Ken gets the boot,” that insider, who was much more skeptical about the future of Ken’s career, added. “Ken doesn’t have any stability or a long-term contract, so the higher-ups could fire him at any time. Bosses over at Jeopardy! must be panicking by now, and word is they’re brainstorming names to replace Ken.”

The first source echoes the sentiment, saying that execs may be already considering new potential hosts in hopes of juicing their ailing program. SNL alum Colin Jost is already doing well with a spin-off series, Pop Culture Jeopardy!, and network bosses can’t seem to get enough of his persona.
