M*A*S*H actor Alan Alda couldn’t have looked any happier at the 2019 SAG Awards on Sunday, January 27 for many reasons! Before he was presented the SAG Life Achievement Award by his former Bridge of Spies costar Tom Hanks, he happily walked the red carpet with a few of his grandkids who celebrated the special evening with him.

“Some of them are missing,” Alan, 83, joked to reporters prior to the annual awards ceremony’s start. The last time Alan brought his grandchildren to a Hollywood awards show was the first time he was nominated for an Oscar in 2005 for The Aviator. “Even that night, I wasn’t as excited as I am today. It’s really special. Everybody always talks about fellow actors being involved in the choice, but it really makes an impression on you when you’re an actor and I’m very touched by it,” he gushed on the carpet of receiving the 2019 SAG Life Achievement Award.

After his friend Tom, 62, later presented him with the coveted honor, Alan gave a touching speech about his acting career. “You know, it’s really hard to describe to you what it feels like to look out and see my fellow actors, my colleagues, my heroes, to welcome me up here like this. It’s an extraordinary feeling,” he told the star-studded crowd. “The thing is, this comes at a time when I’ve had a chance to look back at my life and to think about what it’s meant to be an actor. And I see, more than ever now, how proud I am to be a member of our brotherhood and sisterhood of actors.”

Alan also gushed that he loves being an actor and his only wish for his fellow peers is to never stop loving what they do. “My wish for all of us is, let’s stay playful,” he said onstage. “Let’s have fun and let’s keep searching. It can’t solve everything — but it wouldn’t hurt. I share this with everybody in the room, thank you so much.”
