We’ve all been watching Al Roker on the Today show for more than 20 years and we have to admit that our favorite weatherman has never looked better! So what’s to thank for his physical transformation since last September? Apparently, the popular ketogenic diet.

Al, 64, has been an open book with the public in regards to his weight-loss journey — from having gastric bypass surgery, changing the way he eats, and getting himself into the gym. For the March 4 Today episode, the self-proclaimed foodie showed viewers how to make New York Times writer Sam Sifton‘s no-recipe sloppy Joes using a keto-friendly bread recipe food blogger Maria Emmerich of Maria Mind Body Healthy. And, while cooking up a storm on-air, Al opened up about his recent lifestyle change.

“Al, how much weight have you lost on the keto diet?” cohost Hoda Kotb asked, to which he replied, “I’ve lost about 40 pounds.” His answer left his fellow cohost Savannah Guthriewho isn’t a huge fan of the low-carb, high-fat diet — absolutely stunned.

Al then noted that he’s now in better health, saying: “My cholesterol — just had them checked a couple weeks ago. Everything’s good.”

Part of the reason behind Al’s weight loss has been wanting to be there for his family which includes his wife Deborah Roberts, 58, and his three children, Courtney, Leila and Nicholas. Al once made a promise to his dying father that he would lose weight and, despite an admittedly trying time after his mother passed, he has done just that.

When it comes to the keto diet, Al isn’t alone. Other celebrities who have tried it include Halle Berry, Sherri Shepherd and even Paula Dean. Not everyone is a fan of the keto diet, though. Biggest Loser‘s Jillian Michaels once questioned why anyone would think it’s a good idea. “What works for you, works for you,” Al replied at the time. “There’s science on both sides that says it’s not a great idea and science that says it is a great idea.”

Keep up the good work, Al! You’re an inspiration.
