With a family of 21, we can’t even begin to imagine what it costs the Duggars to feed and clothe their 19 children, not to mention the costs of transporting them to and from school and their various activities!

Matriarch Michelle’s cost-cutting strategies may save the family a fortune, but their monthly bill will still give you sticker shock!

“Our goal for our monthly food budget is $3,000,” the 47-year-old reveals, which roughly evens out to $35 a person per week.

“It used to be more like $2,000, but we’ve noticed the costs of groceries have gone up. Also, our boys have grown a lot and they have hollow legs.”

Scroll down for a few of Michelle’s best grocery shopping tips!

  1. Shop at discount stores. warehouse clubs and co-ops: “You can save thousands of dollars doing just that,” she says.

  2. Buy in bulk: This strategy requires a good amount of storage space, but stocking up on smaller items —like spices and nuts — will save you a pretty penny too.

  3. Stock up every month on staples: For the reality star, staples include butter, cereal and oats, to name a few. You’ll never have to run out to the store for a single stick of butter again!

  4. Buy fresh produce every 3 to 4 days: “Fresh” typically means it won’t be good after a week, so Michelle makes multiple trips to the grocery store for the family’s fruits and vegetables.
