Why Are Chip and Joanna Gaines Leaving 'Fixer Upper' After Season 5? Here's What We Know

This is so upsetting! Beloved HGTV stars Chip Gaines and Joanna Gaines have officially announced their hit show Fixer Upper will end after its upcoming fifth season. "It is with both sadness and expectation that we share the news that Season 5 of Fixer Upper will be our last," the couple wrote on their blog on Tuesday, Sept. 26. "While we are confident that this is the right choice for us, it has for sure not been an easy one to come to terms with. Our family has grown up alongside yours, and we have felt you rooting us on from the other side of the screen. How bittersweet to say goodbye to the very thing that introduced us all in the first place."

"This has been an amazing adventure! We have poured our blood, sweat and tears into this show... Though our Fixer Upper chapter is coming to a close, we aren’t done with [our hometown, Waxo, TX]. We aren’t done renovating homes. We aren’t done designing things to make your home your favorite place on earth. We aren’t done working towards restoration in all things or helping out those who could use a hand. In fact, in all of these of things, we are just getting started," Chip, 42, and Jo, 39, continued.

"We will forever be thankful for HGTV and this opportunity of a lifetime... Thank you for caring about these homes and these families and the things that we care so much about... Who knows what the future holds, but we’re excited for whatever is around the bend and in the meantime, we will definitely be staying in touch," their message read.

The news of Fixer Upper's impending end comes after months of speculation that Joanna was leaving the popular HGTV show to pursue other projects. Earlier this year, the mom-of-four took to the family's Magnolia Market blog to address the rampant rumors of her departure. "So many things are happening right now and it feels like we are moving at the speed of light... At this point in our career we can honestly say, we’ve heard it all — from reports of us moving our family to Vegas to us having more or less children than we actually have. So remember, you can’t believe everything you read," she wrote at the time.

"Just in case you were wondering, [yes], we are currently filming Season 5 of the show. No, I am not getting into the business of facial creams. And [no], we are not expecting baby No. 5. And no worries, believing some of these stories happens to the best of us," Jo continued. Fixer Upper previously premiered on HGTV in May 2013 with the first season later starting in April 2014. Since then, Chip and Joanna have established a home improvement empire that includes their Magnolia Market compound, a lifetsyle magazine, a real estate company, paint, rug, wallpaper, and furniture lines, a restaurant, a luxury vacation rental, and several books. But why are Chip and Joanna calling it quits on their reality TV career? Here, Closer Weekly breaks it down for you.

They are working on a lifestyle collection with Target.

The couple also recently announced their new partnership with Target to create a lifestyle line hitting stores this November. "At the core of the Magnolia brand is the desire to make homes beautiful, but with a focus on family and practicality. We want to create spaces that families want to gather in," Joanna recently said of their newest project. "We’ve always dreamed of working with a retailer to create a collection that could reach more people at a more affordable price point. Coming together with Target not only allows us to design beautiful pieces for people all over the country, it also allows us to help communities in a bigger way than we could have ever imagined."

They are releasing a cookbook.

Joanna took to Instagram on Friday, Sept. 22, to let her fans know that they can soon learn how to make the same recipes she and Chip make at home. “After a week long photoshoot for our cookbook, celebrating with some homemade mac n cheese and brownie pie just feels right,” she wrote, adding that the cookbook will be titled Magnolia Table Cookbook.

They want to spend more time with their family.

“Our beautiful children are growing up so quickly…So I think [it’s] the idea that we kind of need to step back and just get [a] fresh vision. We need to get some rest, but also just hunker down with our kiddos,” Joanna has said. “It’s something that we’re excited about, but also sad that this chapter of our lives is coming to an end.”

They’re probably tired of rumors about their marriage.

Because of their sudden mega-fame, Chip and Jo — who have been married since 2003 — have also been the target of frequent divorce rumors. In mid-September, the duo again put the gossip to rest "I don’t do great with seeing that kind of stuff, reading into it — I just don’t know what’s going on. So then I’ll hear someone come up to me and say, 'I hear you and Chip are getting a divorce!' And I’ll be like, 'Where did you hear that?' I don’t know any of this!' We do our due diligence in letting people know as much as we can, 'This isn’t us. Don’t be scammed,'" Joanna said.
