As soon as Megyn Kelly announced her departure from Fox News to start a gig at NBC, she instantly became the talk of the town. Though most of her new Today colleagues welcomed her with open arms — at least while the cameras were rolling — she and fellow anchor Matt Lauer immediately butted heads. Keep scrolling to get the details on how their feud escalated!

First impressions

Prior to her first days at Today, Megyn interviewed conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on her radio show — a move that didn’t sit well with Matt at the time. “Matt thinks this interview gave a platform to an individual who peddles conspiracy theories about dead children,” a network insider told In Touch. “Matt is incensed that she is tarnishing the network’s image.”

A rocky start

It’s safe to say that Megyn’s first days at NBC were anything but easy, as she received fan backlash and poor reviews from critics, which also resulted in low ratings. “[She] was absolutely mortified,” said a source. “Leaving Fox was a huge gamble for her and she doesn’t want to give anyone the satisfaction of seeing her fail.”

Putting their differences aside

Despite the drama, Matt and Megyn played nice whenever they were in front of the camera together, but behind the scenes, things were still icy. So much so, that Matt was pulled aside by executives and “was told it was time to get on board with Megyn’s show or he could find another place to work,” an insider shared with In Touch. Many Today show employees suspected that either Matt or Megyn would soon get the boot — but the choice was easy for the network to make when soon after, multiple sexual misconduct allegations against Matt came out, resulting in him getting fired.

Matt’s firing

The day Matt’s dismissal was announced, Megyn — who claimed that she had been sexually harassed herself by former colleague Roger Ailes — opened her segment by addressing the situation. “This one does hit close to home. I, too, have known Matt for a long time. He has been a friend, and kind and supportive to me and my transition to NBC News. I see the anguish on my colleagues’ faces,” she stated. “But when this happens, what we don’t see is the pain on the faces of those who’ve found the courage to come forward. And that is a terrifying thing to do.”

She added salt to the wound when she made the bold to move of inviting Matt and any of his accusers to her show to discuss the situation. “As hard as it is to report on one of our own colleagues, we remain committed to telling people’s stories if they choose to come forward and the women in this case, too, the Matt Lauer case, are invited and welcome to do exactly that on this show,” she said. “We have been that place in all the other cases and we will be that place — as well as for the accused — here on this hour.”

The aftermath

Aside from giving victims a platform to tell their stories, Megyn also made plans to use the scandal to her advantage, as a source claimed that she’s planning to write a tell-all book that could score her a $10 million paycheck. “She wasn’t Matt’s colleague for very long, but long enough to gather enough information about him to fill a book, which is exactly what she’s planning to do,” a source told _ Life & Style_. The piece will expose “Matt’s secret life at NBC, his dirty deeds, and horrible antics with women.”

“Matt was in your living room or at your breakfast table every morning,” explains the source. “Exposing him in a book, getting to why and how he did it, talking to his victims and colleagues, will be huge.”
