The new documentary I Am: Heath Ledger premieres tonight, so many fans of the late Heath Ledger are curious what really happened to the actor nearly 10 years after his death.
On January 22, 2008, Heath passed away from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. He was 28 years old at the time. During an interview in the years following his death, his dad, Kim Ledger, got candid about his son dying at such a young age.

"It was totally his fault. It was no one else’s. He reached for [the pills]. He put them in his system. You can’t blame anyone else in that situation. That’s hard to accept because I loved him so much and was so proud of him," he said. "Heath mixed a couple of drugs together with sleeping tablets and he’s gone forever. That’s something [my wife, Sally, Kate, and I] just have to deal with."

"His sister was on the phone with him the night before telling him not to take the prescription medications with the sleeping tablets," Kim continued. "He said, ‘Katie, Katie, I’m fine now. I know what I’m doing.' [Heath] would have had no idea."
Heath was not married at the time of his death, although he did leave behind a daughter, Matilda, who was just two years old at the time of her dad's passing. Heath welcomed his now-11-year-old girl with his ex-girlfriend Michelle Williams, whom he dated from 2004 until 2007 and welcomed Matilda with in October 2005.
I Am Heath Ledger is airing Wednesday, May 17, at 10 p.m. ET on Spike.
