It was difficult. When I started, I had a two-year-old. We had just moved from Chicago to Williamsburg, Va., and I started a new job. I found myself surrounded by young, fit co-workers and I was very overweight and unhappy. It took a lot for me to play with my daughter and I often found myself sitting on the couch watching her play with her dad instead of playing with her myself.

Before I got pregnant with my daughter, I had found the program online. [Later], I called and made an appointment to see a counselor at the center. It made [losing weight] super simple. I did not have to think about what I was eating with the exception of one meal. As for exercise, once I had lost around 30 pounds, I began walking the neighborhood. Then, I began running. Once I felt more comfortable with myself, I began taking hot yoga classes two to three times per week. I also joined a bootcamp class at a [gym] and worked out with a group 45 minutes a day, three times a week.

[It was hard] to make time for myself. A lot of the time I had to chose between working out or spending time with my family. In the long run, I knew my [exercise] and dedication to losing the weight was worth the temporary time away from my daughter. I started working out before she woke up or after she went to bed. My time was spread thin, but it was well worth it.
I feel healthy and good about myself. I have energy and am able to keep up with my daughter. I felt attractive, so my relationship with my husband improved — and we had another child! I am currently in the process of losing the weight for a second time after having my son. I am using the Medifast program specifically designed for nursing mothers. I just started the program mid-February and I am down 10 pounds. I look forward to getting back to working out and the level of fitness I was at before I got pregnant, but I will be starting with walking. Finding time between working full time and having both a four-year old and a four-month-old makes it difficult, but through this journey I’ve learned how important it is to schedule me time.
