I’ve struggled with my weight my entire life. By age 16, I was already battling high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and hypothyroidism — conditions which I've continued to struggle with throughout my adult life. I didn’t want to be big. I tried all the quick weight-loss programs — shakes, protein bars, cutting calories, eating only salads, skipping meals — but nothing ever worked. I hit a point where I was just completely discouraged and thought no matter how hard I tried, I’d always be fat.

It was actually my 2010 New Year’s Resolution to lose 15 pounds. I remember my one friend thought I was crazy. She knew how much I’d struggled with weight loss in the past, and thought there was no way I’d stick to it, but I was determined. I was living an incredibly unhealthy lifestyle and my health was only worsening. I knew it was now or never.
I started my weight-loss journey by simply counting calories. I started writing down everything I ate in a food log and made sure I was keeping my calorie consumption to an acceptable level. I did this for a year and lost about 70 pounds. Later, I found the app-based weight loss program Lose It!, which kept track of my nutritional plan, caloric intake and fitness goals — it really kick-started my weight loss and provided the motivation I needed.

I used to be a mindless eater — I couldn’t stop myself. Now that’s all changed. I don’t eat junk. It’s not a sacrifice, it’s a choice. I’ll occasionally treat myself to some ice cream or a piece of cake, but now these foods are actually treats instead of my everyday diet. I try to eat a lot of high-protein foods like chicken, lean pork and yogurt. I’ve also completely changed the way I snack — now I count out a serving and put the rest away. I exercise every day. I sit down and I put together a daily workout calendar each moth. I exercised 311 days out of 365 last year. I would have never been able to accomplish that at my previous weight.
I feel great! I used to have a darker outlook on life. I was pretty crabby and didn’t have a lot of friends, and that mostly came from a lack of confidence. But ever since I lost the weight, I’ve transformed into a completely different person. I’m a lot happier. I was never an outgoing person, but now I am! Plus the health benefits are unbelievable. Losing weight has really changed my life for the better.
