This isn’t good. CBS News reported on Tuesday, Oct. 2 that Tom Petty sadly died at the age of 66, but now, they’re backtracking on their original report. CBS News is now reporting TMZ‘s claim that Tom is “clinging to life” at an LA hospital. The LAPD also took to Twitter to clear up the confusion. “The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertently [sic] provided to some media sources. However, the LAPD has no investigative role in this matter. We apologize for any inconvenience in this reporting,” the tweets read.

CBS News first claimed Tom died following reports that the music sensation was hospitalized on Sunday, Oct. 1 after being found in full cardiac arrest in his Malibu home. He was unconscious and not breathing at the time, TMZ revealed. Though an EMT was reportedly able to get a pulse upon arrival at his house, Tom was later put on life support. He was originally found in critical condition.

You know Tom as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, a group that became super well known in the mid-1970s. He recently wrapped up his tour last week in LA. Tom previously shared that he thought the band’s 40th-anniversary tour would be their last. “We’re all on the backside of our 60s,” he told Rolling Stone. “I have a granddaughter now I’d like to see as much as I can. I don’t want to spend my life on the road. This tour will take me away for four months. With a little kid, that’s a lot of time.” Our thoughts are with the musician’s family and friends during this difficult time.
