The ladies of The View faced major backlash earlier this week after making fun of Miss America contestant Miss Colorado Kelley Johnson's talent of reciting a monologue about her profession as a nurse — and now co-hosts Michelle Collins and Joy Behar are clarifying their remarks.
"People were very upset with what we said, and I just want to say, we love nurses... we adore you, we respect you, you guys are wonderful... I was not talking about [Johnson] as a nurse, we were talking about the talent competition and it got misconstrued," Michelle said on Wednesday morning's show.
"I was just not paying attention — I was looking at a Miss America tape and there's a woman wearing an outfit with a stethoscope and I'm thinking, 'Is she in a costume?' I didn't think she was a nurse, I'm used to seeing [the contestants] in gowns and bathing suits. It was just stupid and inattentive on my part," Joy chimed in, referring to her previous comment about Johnson wearing a "doctor's stethoscope."
On Monday, Sept. 14, Michelle, 34, and Joy, 72, openly mocked Johnson's monologue from the pageant's Sunday, Sept. 13 airing. "The talent, though, I have to say, the woman who won sang opera, and she was incredible. Really good," Michelle began the discussion. "But then there was a girl who wrote her own monologue and I was like 'Turn the volume up, this is going be amazing, let's listen.' She came out in a nurse's uniform and basically read her emails out loud and shockingly did not win."
"Seriously?!" Joy chimed in, acting jokingly perplexed that Johnson didn't take the crown. "I swear to God it was hilarious," Michelle replied. "Why does she have a doctor's stethoscope on?" Joy asked, to which Michelle responded, "She helps patients with Alzheimer's, which I know is not funny, but I swear you had to see it."
The ignorance from @TheView re: what nurses do makes me ill. Her monologue was beautiful. None of us are "just a nurse"! Educate yourselves.— Allison White (@AllyDub) September 15, 2015
Following the panel discussion, fans of The View took to Twitter to share their outrage at Joy and Michelle's comments and to clarify that nurses too wear stethoscopes because they practice medicine just like doctors. "The ignorance from @TheView re: what nurses do makes me ill. Her monologue was beautiful. None of us are "just a nurse"! Educate yourselves," Twitter user @AllyDub wrote.
