The Big Bang Theory is getting a new prequel show, CBS announced on Monday, March 13. The spin-off series is titled Young Sheldon and will follow genius Sheldon Cooper and his family.

Child star Iain Armitage — who is now starring in Reese Witherspoon's HBO mini-series, Big Little Lies — has already joined the new cast to portray young Sheldon. The theoretical physicist is currently played by Jim Parsons on Big Bang, which has aired on CBS since September 2007.

According to the network, the single-camera comedy will run 30 minutes and chronicle nine-year-old Sheldon's upbringing in East Texas and early move to high school.

Zoe Perry and Lance Barber have signed on to play Sheldon's parents, Mary Cooper and George Cooper, Sr., respectively. Zoe is the adult daughter of Roseanne actress Laurie Metcalf, who has guest-starred as Sheldon's mother on Big Bang in the past.

Young actors Raegan Revord and Montana Jordan have additionally been cast as Sheldon's fraternal twin sister, Missy Cooper, and younger brother, George Cooper, Jr., respectively.

Jon Favreau — known for directing hit movies including Elf, Iron Man, Cowboys & Aliens, and The Jungle Book — will executive produce and direct the series' first episode. The Big Bang Theory creators Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro have also joined the project.
Young Sheldon is set to premiere on CBS in fall 2017.
