Before calling off their engagement in May 2014, Sofia Vergara and her then-fiancé Nick Loeb had hopes of starting a family together — and even reportedly hired a surrogate.
According to a new report from 'In Touch Weekly,' the 'Modern Family' star, 42, "insisted" her 44-year-old friend carry the couple's baby despite objections from Nick, 39, and the woman's doctor claiming the pregnancy could be harmful to her health.

In new court documents obtained by the magazine, the businessman claimed Sofia showered her friend with $200,000 in gifts and mortgage payments on her home though the couple's lawyer advised against the excessive monetary offerings.

"Although the parties' counsel expressly advised the parties against compensating a gestational surrogate, upon information and belief, without [Nick's] consent, and over [Nick's] repeated objections, [Sofia] provided the surrogate a variety of expensive gifts in exchange for her services," the papers explain.
On two separate occasions throughout their more than four-year relationship, embryos were allegedly implanted into the woman, but neither survived.

Earlier this week, 'In Touch Weekly' revealed Nick filed a lawsuit against Sofia — who is now engaged to actor Joe Manganiello — to prevent her from destroying the two remaining cryopreserved eggs they previously created through in vitro fertilization.
Nick “seeks to ensure that the Female Embryos are not destroyed, but [Sofia] refuses to agree to their preservation under all circumstances,” the magazine reported.
