The Chicago-born television writer is estimated to be worth a whopping $120 million. In addition to creating hit shows with ABC, Shonda has written several movies — including Crossroads and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement — and authored a memoir, Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun, and Be Your Own Person.
What TV shows has Shonda created?
Shonda has created seven successful ABC series with her production company, ShondaLand: Grey’s Anatomy (2005–present), Private Practice (2007–2013), Off the Map (2011), Scandal (2012–present), How to Get Away with Murder (2014–present), The Catch (2016-2017), and Still Star-Crossed (2017).
Is Shonda working on any new TV shows?
Yes! The Dartmouth College grad seemingly has two new series in the works: I’m Judging You and a new Grey’s Anatomy spin-off. I’m Judging You is based on Luvvie Ajayi’s book, I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual. No word yet on when the comedy is set to air on ABC. The yet-to-be-titled Grey’s spin-off is now in development at ABC and will reportedly follow a group of Seattle firefighters.
Is Shonda creating shows for Netflix, too?
Yes! In August it was announced that Shonda had signed a multi-year production deal with Netflix to start creating new online series while continuing to produce her current ABC shows. “Shonda Rhimes is one of the greatest storytellers in the history of television. Her work is gripping, inventive, pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, taboo-breaking television at its best. I’ve gotten the chance to know Shonda and she’s a true Netflixer at heart — she loves TV and films, she cares passionately about her work, and she delivers for her audience. We’re so excited to welcome her to Netflix,” Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement at the time.
“Shondaland’s move to Netflix is the result of a shared plan Ted Sarandos and I built based on my vision for myself as a storyteller and for the evolution of my company. Ted provides a clear, fearless space for creators at Netflix,” Shonda said. We can’t wait to watch her new Netflix shows in the future!

Is Shonda married?
No, she is not! In a previous interview with Oprah Winfrey, Shonda revealed she’s never wanted to tie the knot. “I was able to finally stand up and say, ‘I don’t want to get married.’ At all. I said that out loud. I said it to my family. I said it to my friends. I said it to anybody who asked. It’s never been a dream of mine,” she said.
Does Shonda have kids?
Yes! Shonda is a mom-of-three. She adopted her first child, daughter Harper Rhimes, in 2002, and adopted her second daughter, Emerson Rhimes, in 2012. In fall 2013, Shonda announced she had welcomed her third child, daughter Beckett Rhimes, via surrogate.
